about

Hey there! Concrete Collage is proud to present P H ▽ T I S M S by Tusk Mite.

Four years after we started talking about releasing Tusk Mite's album, here it is finaly, and what a beast it is. From "Morph" to "Finale" you will embark for an epic journey into madness.
Whirlwind of glitches meet orchestral like compositions, shattered breakbeats all over, danger is around the corner at all times.

Here are a few words from our beloved noise making human being to complement this description:

"Here's a little introduction to the concept of P H ▽ T I S M S and an explanation to why it took me so long to finish it. At first i was hesitant to even do this write up in the fear of being perceived "hey look at me"ish, but after working my ass off on this album for years because of the concept, i thought what the hell.
So around the time i was wrapping up Plastic Planet i found out that being able to sense sound visually in various different colours, shapes, textures and movements isn't how sound is normally perceived by everyone, but a certain sensory wiring impairment in the brain called synesthesia, in which sensory stimulation to one sense is involuntarily experienced in another one simultaneously and in my case visually experiencing sounds as moving shapes and colours, which up to that point, i thought was normal and how everyone perceived sound.
I started searching up more about it and came across multiple artists who use their sound>vision synesthesia to paint or draw their favourite tracks and that their artwork is purely based on how they visually experience their favourite tracks.
This gave me an idea to try and do it the other way around. Not only composing tracks using it as the soul of it (which it obviously already is), but creating tracks focusing purely on certain shapes, colours and movements unique to each track.
Sort of like creating a moving painting with certain colours/gradients using soundscapes and melodic structures and then filling it in even further with intricate shapes and spastic movements using sharp textural sounds (percussions, breakbeats, bloops, wobbles etc).
The only problem was that i had no idea (and still don't) how to trigger it as it comes and goes randomly, and this is one of the reasons why it took me so long to finish P H ▽ T I S M S, well that and the pandemic taking a toll on my creative process.
To go with the album i wanted to create a visualized piece of art for every track based on how i experience certain favourite moment in them visually... But seeing that the album took so long i thought that i'd put the album out first. However, i did make the cover artwork myself and implied a piece of every track to it with the same idea.
I also tried to create some sounds based on more premeditated shapes which i would've implied to my tracks but it turned out to be impossible as they are purely tone, timbre and time -reliant, constantly moving and as transient as the sound itself is.
Ironically the most dominant colour throughout the whole album is a few shades of my least favourite colours; baby and navy blue (funny how it hits the prettiest notes). Anyway Hope you enjoy it!"
